What are group insurance benefits?

Group insurance benefit plans cover a defined group of people such as the employees at a company. These plans are often offered by employers as part of a total compensation package. These group plans offer comprehensive health coverage, and may offer life insurance or other forms of additional insurance.

How many employees do you need for group health insurance?

Group insurance only requires one full time employee. Once a business is in place for two years, it can offer employees group health insurance.

Can I claim group insurance premiums on my taxes?

Yes. Employer contributions for group life insurance are considered a taxable benefit to the employee. To account for this, the applicable employer paid premiums need to be added to the employee’s income through payroll deductions, or as a lump sum amount, on each employee’s T4 at the end of the year.
